Forcing, Staging & Care — Quick Guide
We force branches in climate-controlled rooms and stage them to a sale-ready stage. Branches do not arrive in full bloom — they arrive staged to protect the bloom. Buyers must finish conditioning and follow these steps for best results.
On arrival — day 0
- Unpack gently, keep stems upright, and keep large shipping bags in place until ready to handle.
- Recut stems under clean, cool water (cut 1–2" at an angle).
- Place in clean buckets with fresh water and floral preservative where possible.
- Check daily and move to warm or cool room depending on desired opening speed.
Temperature rules
- Speed up opening: warm room 65–75°F — useful for last-minute acceleration.
- Hold / slow opening: cool dark 34–40°F — use for storage or slower events.
- Avoid extremes: heat, wind, or direct sun will dry stems and shorten vase life.
Handling tips
- Space stems so heads don’t rub while hydrating.
- For large blooms (tulip magnolia), provide extra stem support and wide buckets.
- For delicate double forms, allow each stem room in buckets to hydrate uniformly.
One perfect stage
There is one optimal stage for shipment: close enough to opening to produce good bloom quality, but early enough to prevent damage in transit. We aim for that stage; the further the product is from it, generally the lower the final bloom quality.

Packing & shipping best practices
We protect buds and heads in transit by packing branches into large plastic shipping bags that hold multiple bundles. The bag ends are wrapped with moist paper to maintain humidity around the buds during transit and to prevent the flowers from drying out. Bundles are then padded and boxed to match the cube used for freight.
- Large plastic bags with moist paper ends: We pack multiple bundles into each large plastic shipping bag; moist paper wrapped at the bag ends helps retain humidity and reduces bud desiccation in transit.
- Bundle protection: padding at box ends and internal separators to prevent movement and abrasion during shipping.
- Boxes & cube: we use boxes sized to the cube rates so freight is predictable and product remains upright and supported.
- Insulation: in hot weather we recommend insulated liners and cold packs; in cold weather ensure boxes are protected from freezing (product will be damaged if frozen).
- Labeling: mark boxes with “THIS SIDE UP” and “KEEP UPRIGHT” and include receiving instructions to protect heads on arrival.
Example: bundled and bagged for shipment — large bags and moist-paper ends help protect buds in transit and hold humidity.
